Amethyst deceivers

A low-level Glen Coe walk with lots of fungi – September |

We started a bit late this day, as the weather wasn’t promising (again), but as it seemed to brighten up a bit, we did a very easy but pleasant walk on the edge of Glencoe village. We saw a lot of different types of fungi, and we had fun trying to identify them with the help of a guidebook. Afterwards, as the weather was holding, we ended up walking up to the Blackwater Dam from Kinlochleven (see the next post, “Kinlochleven to Blackwater Dam, and back along the conduit”)

Pinkish flower - from the Amaranthaceae family?

Pinkish flower – from the Amaranthaceae family? It took a while to find the following candidates: Gomphrena Pulchella, Gomphrena Fireworks, and Gomphrena Canescens – they don’t seem to get mentioned in the UK very often, and it was not in a British plants database. I think this example might be finishing blooming, with the inner bits already gone. *June 2014 edit – it seems to be a (Common) Knapweed or Hardhead (Centaurea of the Asteraceae family).
