Rain and high winds were forecast. We had planned to go up Coire nam Beithach to the west of Aonach Dubh up to the peak of Bidean nam Bian, but as soon as we got out of the vehicle, we realised it was a very windy day, and the route we were looking at was getting quite a buffeting. So, change of plan – we decided to go further into the glen, and walk up to the Lost Valley up Coire Gabhail, and see how things went.

As it happened, it was definitely a lot more sheltered on the northern side of the Three Sisters. Once we got to the Lost Valley, it seemed a shame not to continue, so we did, getting to the bealach (col) at the top of Coire Gabhail, then turning left (east) to go up to Stob Coire Sgreamhach, returning to the bealach, then continuing north-west as far as Bidean nam Bian. We were mindful of the high winds along the ridge and the weather (we put on gloves and balaclavas for this, and it did hail a couple of times), which was obscuring the view further on to Stob Coire nam Beith, so we headed back down the same way we’d gone up.

We’d had to cross the burn on the way up, and I’d just about managed not to get my feet in the water. On the way back down, it proved a bit more difficult – the water level had got noticeably higher in the short time that had passed, I suppose with the earlier rainfall having worked its way into the watercourses.
