The first time we went to walk over the Nantlle ridge was in August earlier in the year. That time, the rain was constant and it was much windier on the ridge itself, and the wetness was making the rock very slippery, so we had ended up turning back.
This time, despite the red sky in the morning, the weather held, and we got as far as the penultimate top of the ridge before we decided to turn back and retrace our steps due to the amount of daylight remaining. We’d started walking at 7.30am, and finished at around 3.15pm.
The ridge has tops with some memorable names – Y Garn (like in the Glyders – means ‘the cairn’), Mynydd Drws y Coed (mountain of/at the door of the wood/of the forest gap?), Trum y Ddysgl (ridge of the dish?), Mynydd Tal y Mignedd (mountain at the end of the bog), Craig Cwm Silyn (Silyn Valley Crag). The last one, Garnedd Goch (red cairn), we didn’t visit on this day.
