Loch Etive in the distance

Plan B up the Wee Buachaille, Glen Coe, Scotland – September

The forecast was for light rain and wind. We decided to try going up Buachaille Etive Beag (the smaller of the Buachailles in Glen Coe). The plan was to walk up the Lairig Eilde pass and then to go up the Buachaille from the southern end of the ridge. We set off, and was soon accompanied by light rain. The route/path we were following crossed the river, but the river was in spate, so we continued on very boggy ground on the same side.

Unfortunately, the rain continued, got worse, and then it got windy as well as we reached the col near the other end of the pass. A bit fed up by this time, we turned back, after which of course the weather improved, so we started heading up the western slope of the Buachaille until we reached the ‘standard route’ path that goes up to the col between the two munros on the ridge, Stob Dubh and Stob Coire Raineach. It was a bit of a slog, as we had to cross several gullies to get to this point.

Once at the col, we turned right to walk to the southern top of Stob Dubh first. Then it was back to the col, then up to the other top of Stob Coire Raineach. The rain had finally stopped by this time, and after we had got back down to the car park, we briefly enjoyed the sunshine until I found a tick attached near my left shoulder. After dealing with this, we went back to the campsite.

Loch Etive shining in the distance. Also visible, from the left, are the lower slopes of Stob na Bròige (part of the big Buachaille), Stob Dubh (the one in Glen Etive), and Ben Starav. I think the bottom part of Stob Coir’ an Albannaich is hidden behind Stob Dubh.
