Chicken of the woods

Fungi in London – end of October | ロンドンでキノコ探し

We went on a one-day fungi identification course, which we’d been wanting to do for at least a year.

Here is what was the biggest find of the day – enough for everybody to take some home to eat. We were told you have to check what kind of tree it’s growing on, and that you don’t really want to eat it if it’s on a conifer.

Chicken of the woods
A fine specimen of 'chicken of the woods' on the side of a tree (willow, therefore edible)

We spotted many other specimens as well (but the one above was the only decent photograph I managed to get) – like psathyrella, turkeytail, stereum-hirsutum, red ascomycete, amanita, ugly milkcaps, earthball, brown birch bolete, mycena, giant polypores, lots of ganoderma, porcelain fungus, wood ear, and a big oyster mushroom.

As for the taste of the ‘chicken’, it didn’t exactly taste like chicken. It had a very firm texture, and sauteeing in butter, with a bit of salt and pepper, seemed to work quite well. No digestive problems!
